Tree Crown Reduction

A pruning technique most often used when a tree has grown too large for it's permitted space and reduced by a percentage. This can also reduce wind resistance, water up-take and enable more light through. It can control the size of a tree in a restricted environment (Conservation Area or TPO) rather than removing the tree completely. This method is much more preferred than 'tree topping' because it results in keeping the trees natural structure, encourages a more natural continued growth while increasing the time before pruning is needed again and minimizes stress. Tree reductions are usually done to reduce the height of the tree but, can be done all around the tree as the picture below shows.

Tree Crown Raising

Tree crown raising is simply removing branches from the bottom of the crown of a tree to provide clearance for pedestrians, vehicles, buildings, or lines of site. This technique also allows valuable sunlight for plant, hedge, grass life underneath the tree. Ideally, this process should leave branches on at least two thirds of the tree's total height. For example, if you want to crown raise a tree that's 30 feet tall, the rule of good practice is you may only remove branches up to 10 feet from the ground.

Tree Crown Thinning

Tree crown thinning is the selective removal of limbs and branches to increase light penetration into your garden and allowing air movement throughout the crown of a tree, reducing wind risks. Tree pruning out the dead and rubbing branches aids a tree's health. This improves a tree's structure and form, reduces risk of falling branches, whilst deterring tree pests that can carry disease to the tree, especially on fruit trees.

Tree Pruning | Tree Maintenance

Tree maintenance is often needed because of health and safety reasons, sunlight issues, tree has out grown a space or just for tree health in general. Removal of the dead, diseased, dangerous (The 3 D's) or rubbing branches improves the tree's structure and form. If carried out in the correct manner, the tree will need less maintenance in the future aiding general health and safety with reduced risk of wind damage.

The photo's shown below covers light issues. The tree is located in the corner of a garden, overhanging and shading three adjoining gardens. The tree was reduced in height and thinned out to allow improved light levels.
